  • Most sources put World War III in the years 2026-2053, and it does seem strange that the New United Nations should have been formed during the war. This inconsistency can perhaps be explained by the fact that TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint" was aired in 1987, when this part of the canon wasn't fully established yet.

I don't see an inconsistency here. First, TNG already established that the post-atomic (post WWIII) era was in 2079 (which is kinda hard to fit in canon now). The intention would then be that the NUN would exist far before the post-atomic horror and its cause (WWIII). Since it existed before WWIII, then there's no reason why it wouldn't be around during the war. The League of Nations was still around during World War II (with little success) and the UN was around during all of the Cold War (which given it's drawn out dates, WWIII might be more similar to).

Also, it's not really "most sources." One source gives the start date (a monitor screen in "In a Mirror, Darkly") and one source gives the end date (comments in Star Trek: First Contact).--Tim Thomason 03:12, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

To be precise the end date was not given. When the Enterprise-E first arrived in the 21st century Data estimated they arrived some 10 years after the end of WWIII, based on the atomic pollution of Earth. Only when he compares the star charts he derives a precise date. On another note, it might be interesting to mention, that the 13 April 1987 version of the script gave the dates 2016 and 2049 instead of 2036 and 2079 ... -- Kobi 13:02, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
