Recognizing the need for a hightened state of readiness aboard the Enterprise (NX-01) in dangerous situations, tactical alert is an alert signal first suggested by Enterprise armory officer Malcolm Reed. When the captain gave the order for tactical alert, the ship's weapons were armed, the hull plating was polarized, and critical systems such as the warp drive were secured. In addition, the ship's crew would report to battlestations.
By the 23rd century, tactical alert was replaced in Starfleet by the red alert and yellow alert conditions.
- Tactical alert was first proposed in ENT: "Singularity".
- While in the process of naming the new condition, the terms Reed-alert and condition red were suggested.
