Synthale, The Way of the Warrior

Synthale

Synthale was a beverage resembling ale made with synthehol.

Quark didn't think too highly of the Bajoran variety of synthale, calling it "dreadful". When Benjamin Sisko asked him about the local synthale in 2369, he remarked "Never trust ale from a god-fearing people." (DS9: "Emissary")

When a Tosk arrived at Deep Space 9, Miles O'Brien bought him a synthale at Quark's. (DS9: "Captive Pursuit")

When Kolos visited Quark to attend an auction of Gamma Quadrant artifacts, he ordered a synthale. (DS9: "Q-Less")

During negotiations between the Paqu and Navot aboard Deep Space 9, both Major Kira Nerys and Woban each ordered a mug of Bajoran synthale. (DS9: "The Storyteller")

One variety of synthale was called Voodai. It was Major Kira's favorite synthale. Quark gave her a bottle as a farewell present in early 2370, after she had previously remarked jokingly that her friends could help her "cry in her synthale". (DS9: "The Circle")

Synthale, Playing God

Blue synthale

The color of synthale is seen here for the first time, as Quark brings the ale in a glass bottle. It is of the same color as regular beer or ale.

Quark remarked to Arjin, that Julian Bashir was sitting in his bar every other day, "crying in his synthale" about Jadzia Dax. Similarly, Arjin tried to forget his worries with a large bottle of synthale, pretending to "see his future" in a full glass of the drink. Dax commented that she wouldn't trust a bottle of synthale to tell the future. (DS9: "Playing God")

Only in this episode, synthale was an opaque bright blue drink.

In a simulation created by the Founders in 2371, Bashir and Miles O'Brien ordered two synthales. Quark told them, the drinks were on the house, as he was in a good mood, having heard that a peace agreement with the Dominion would soon be reached. (DS9: "The Search, Part II")

After a long hard day at work, Miles O'Brien ordered a tall glass of synthale from the replicator in his quarters. (DS9: "The House of Quark")

After getting drunk on a large bottle of whiskey and singing "Jerusalem", Chief O'Brien contemplated switching to synthale for a moment, but Doctor Bashir replied that it wasn't a "synthale-kind of night". (DS9: "Explorers")

O'Brien liked his synthale extra-stout. When he was engaging in a darts-competition with the Vulcan Syvar, O'Brien severely injured his right shoulder when Quark handed him the drink. (DS9: "Shakaar")

In early 2372, O'Brien sat down next to newly arrived Worf, enjoying a large mug of synthale. (DS9: "The Way of the Warrior")

Voodai synthale

The episode's script specified O'Brien's drink to be synthale and not regular beer.

After the Bajoran Time of Cleansing of the same year was over, Major Kira ordered two mugs of synthale and a double order of hasperat for herself and a fellow Bajoran officer. (DS9: "Bar Association")

After returning from imprisonment by the Argrathi, Miles O'Brien ordered a synthale in Quark's and threatened the barkeeper that he would "break every bone" in his "worthless little body" when Quark took longer than usual to give the chief his drink. (DS9: "Hard Time")

When returning from a reconnaissance mission into Cardassian space in 2374, O'Brien, Bashir and Dax ordered three synthales. (DS9: "The Magnificent Ferengi")

Synthale was nearly always served from nontransparent bottles in Quark's regular mugs, so the color of the drink was not seen in most episodes. Only Miles O'Brien and Arjin were seen drinking the synthale from transparent glasses. The Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 488) describes synthale as a Bajoran drink, though at least one other variant exists and Sisko's question about the "local" synthale implied non-Bajoran types of synthale.
