In 2154, subspace transcievers were used by the Romulan Star Empire on the exterior of the Romulan drone-ship.
Later, subspace transcievers were used by the Borg to link drones in a collective consciousness.
The spikes on the Romulan drone-ship were subspace transcievers. By extension, the spikes at either end of the Earth Spacedock were probably also subspace transcievers.
