The term "subspace sandbar" is a nickname for a region of extremely "dense" subspace. In such an area, a starship's warp drive cannot form an effective warp field, essentially "stranding" the ship as if it were a watercraft on a sandbar.

The USS Voyager became stranded on a subspace sandbar once during its travels through the Delta Quadrant. (VOY: "Bride of Chaotica!")

The idea of varying densities of subspace has been long speculated about by fans as a possible explanation for the seeming discrepancies in speeds attained by starships in various episodes and across various series. The theory would seem to be supported by this idea.
