A subspace distortion or subspace disturbance was a distortion of normal spatial fabric. Subspace fabric was vulnerable to distortions when a mass was placed within subspace. This effect was similar to the effect of gravity, but due to the properties of subspace the mass was somewhat lighter and the effect was slightly different.

In 2154, Travis Mayweather detected a massive subspace distortion, caused by twelve Vulcan cruisers who were sent by the Vulcan High Command. (ENT: "Kir'Shara")

Reginald Barclay was able to create such a subspace anomaly by emanating a highly-charged graviton field from the warp nacelles of the USS EnterpriseD. The disturbance altered subspace sufficiently to create what a type of wormhole. The Enterprise was moved 30,000 light years in less than a minute, but inside the rift people experienced a quantum level oscillation delay, doubling every 12.3 seconds. It experienced this effect for about 45 seconds, and Data mentioned that any longer would probably rip humanoid cells apart. (TNG: "The Nth Degree")

In 2372, Chief O'Brien detected a big subspace disturbance when the cloaked Klingon Task force set course for Cardassia Prime, to invade the Cardassian Empire. (DS9: "The Way of the Warrior")
