The sub-quantum transporter was a technology invented by Emory Erickson, designed to replace the transporter already in use by Starfleet as of 2154. It was designed to beam an object or person from planet-to-planet, theoretically making starships obsolete.
Erickson boarded the Enterprise NX-01 in 2154 to test this new technology, and was successful in beaming a probe 40,000 kilometers, a distance never before acheived using traditional transporter technology. It was soon discovered, however, that the sub-quantum transporter was a fundamentally flawed concept, and that Erickson was only using it as a ruse to gain access to Enterprise's transporter, in an attempt to rescue his son, who had been lost in a transporter beam fifteen years earlier.
