Sturgeon was a male Human Starfleet enlisted crewman who lived during the mid-23rd century. He served in the sciences division aboard the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, during the mid-2260s.

In 2266, Sturgeon, along with Crewman Green, both armed with a type 2 phaser, made up two-thirds of the landing party that joined Captain Kirk on the surface of planet M-113 to investigate the death of Darnell, a crewman who had apparently been murdered during the previous visit to the surface. Kirk ordered Sturgeon to locate and collect a sample of the poisonous Borgia plant, which was supposedly the cause of Darnell's death. While searching, however, Sturgeon was attacked and killed by a creature which extracted all of the salt from his body as a form of sustenance.

Following his death, Kirk returned to the ship and informed Berkley that "[t]here's a body down there. Sturgeon." Berkley simply replied, "We'll bring him home, sir." (TOS: "The Man Trap")

Sturgeon was played by John Arndt, who later appeared as Crewman Fields.
His character was described in the final draft of the script simply as, one of "two armed crewmen, armed with phaser pistols."
According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 479), he was named for Theodore Sturgeon, writer of the episodes "Shore Leave" and "Amok Time".
