Stevens was an enlisted crewman serving in engineering aboard the USS Defiant in the 24th century, under the command of Captain Benjamin Sisko.

In 2372, Stevens was aboard the Defiant during its mission to the Karemma in the Gamma Quadrant in an effort to establish trade relations with that species. In the course of the mission the Defiant came under attack from a Jem'Hadar attack ship and was forced into the atmosphere of a gas giant with severe damage.

Stevens and Enrique Muñiz were together in engineering at the time and assisted Miles O'Brien and Worf in establishing command operations from that location. They were later able to modify the main deflector to act as a phaser array which the Defiant used to destroy the Jem'Hadar ship. (DS9: "Starship Down")
