Statistical mechanics was an application that combined mathematical and physical theories.

Wesley Crusher helped his friend Joshua Albert with his studies in statistical mechanics at Starfleet Academy. While Joshua's father, Lt Com Albert, thought one of his son's weakness was in mathematics, Wesley explained that that was not the case, and that Joshua was able to understand the subject, however, he had no interest in doing it.
