For the alternate reality counterpart, please see Starbase 1 (alternate reality).

Starbase 1 was a Federation Starbase 1-type space station administered by Starfleet. Located in the Sol system, it was considered to be one of Starfleet's oldest and most venerable installations. (SNW: "Spock Amok")

Location[]

The location of the base was labeled on a stellar cartography chart seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Spock Amok", "A Quality of Mercy")

The starbase's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. Starbase 1 was in or near to Federation space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

In 2401, the location of Starbase 1 was labeled on a star chart that was seen on the USS Stargazer's bridge viewscreen. The chart was used to show the location of the combined Starfleet-Borg armada and where it needed to go to face a galactic-level threat. (PIC: "Farewell")

Later that year, this starbase's position was labeled on a star chart used by Captain William T. Riker during his attempt at finding the last known location of the SS Eleos XII. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

In 3190, the location of this base was labeled on a star chart used by Commander Paul Stamets for tracking the movement of the Dark Matter Anomaly through the galaxy. (DIS: "The Examples")

The base is commonly located outside the Sol system in these charts.

Service history[]

Starbase 1 lake, 2259

A fishing lake in the forested area of Starbase 1

The first base established by Starfleet, Starbase 1 was constructed around seed pods sent into space by scientists during World War III. These pods contained forests that had grown too large to be returned to Earth. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds")

Starbase 1

Starbase 1 after the Klingons took it over during the Klingon War.

During the Federation-Klingon War, Starbase 1 was located, sans seed pods, over a planetary body one hundred au from Earth. In 2257, the starbase and three nearby starships fell to the forces of House D'Ghor. The Federation remained unaware of the attack until the USS Discovery arrived to find only 274 Klingons and a D'Ghor crest painted on the station, with no signs of its previous eighty thousand inhabitants. Admiral Katrina Cornwell lamented that, with this loss, the Klingons were "practically in Earth's backyard." (DIS: "The War Without, The War Within")

By 2259, Starbase 1 had been rebuilt and was relocated in orbit of Jupiter. That year, the USS Enterprise docked there after its mission to Kiley 279. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Spock Amok")

Later that year, the Enterprise returned to Starbase 1 for shore leave following their narrow escape from the Gorn in the Finibus system. During their stay, the starbase hosted negotiations between the Federation and the R'ongovian Protectorate. (SNW: "Spock Amok")

Later, the Enterprise remained docked for shore leave and was receiving comprehensive inspections, systems checks, and upgrades from the chief fleet inspector, Commander Pelia, and her team from Operational Support Services. (SNW: "The Broken Circle")

When Bradward Boimler and Beckett Mariner time traveled from the 24th century, Captain Pike wanted to confine them to Quarters until the Enterprise reached Starbase 1 and have them deal with the duo. (SNW: "Those Old Scientists")

By late 2259, Doctor Carol Marcus was stationed on Starbase 1. (SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody")

Background information[]

At a distance of one hundred au from Earth, twice that of Pluto at its furthest point, Starbase 1 would have been located in the far reaches of the Sol system during the Klingon War, likely within the scattered disc. Although the planet remained unnamed, it may have been intended to be one of the many icy dwarf planets found in this region of space.

Manny Coto once commented that, if Star Trek: Enterprise had gone on to a fifth season, one episode of that season would have been called "Starbase 1". The installment would have depicted the origins of the first starbase. [1](X)

Apocrypha[]

Starbase 1 appears in the "Age of Discovery" expansion of Star Trek Online. In the mission "Downfall", the player ship is tasked to protect the station during its evacuation in 2257 alongside the USS Ticonderoga (β) and the USS Sebrova (β) (establishing the three starships mentioned by Admiral Cornwell). The forces of House D'Ghor are joined in the attack by the House of Mo'Kai matriarch J'Ula (β), a sister of T'Kuvma. J'Ula uses an experimental mycelium weapon aboard her flagship, the IKS Lukara (β), to destroy the player ship. Unknowingly, however, she sends both herself and the player to the early 25th century. In accordance with on-screen statements, Starbase 1 is shown to orbit a small planetoid with a moon in the far reaches of the solar system. The name of the planetary body is not provided.

Reference sources predating the station's 2018 appearance on Star Trek: Discovery mention several different facilities called "Starbase 1". According to Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology, Starbase 1 was located in Sector 3A, where it managed to remain operational for eight years before its destruction by Romulans. Star Trek: Federation - The First 150 Years establishes that this base was built by United Earth's Starfleet on Berengaria VII and was lost in the Earth-Romulan War. According to the Star Fleet Technical Manual, a mid-23rd century Starbase 1 had the registry NCC-6038 and was located six parsecs away from the Sol system. The Star Trek Maps places Starbase 1 sixty parsecs away from Earth, in Quadrant 0. According to the novel Mutiny on the Enterprise, Starbase 1 in the 2260s was also located on a planet in deep space. The Star Trek Book (pp. 234-235) identifies the alternate reality Starbase 1-design as being Starbase 1 in the prime timeline, built as a United Earth outpost in orbit of Algeron in 2156, destroyed at the start of the Earth-Romulan War.

In addition, several sources also establish Spacedock One as Starbase 1. This includes the FASA module Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update, the novels Tales of the Dominion War and Articles of the Federation, and 25th-century missions and background lore from Star Trek Online. As these references are dated from the 2280s to the 2400s, it is possible that the original Starbase 1 was decommissioned or renamed by this time.
