The Star Trek films were the first franchise properties to be released on DVD.
The initial release of the first nine films, beginning in 1998, saw each film released in a 'vanilla' version, with only their trailers included as special features. The films were released in reverse chronological order, starting with Star Trek: First Contact (Star Trek: Insurrection was slotted in between Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home).
These would be released in Region 2 – starting with Star Trek: Insurrection – in 2000. Some of the Region 2 releases in the UK came in Special Numbered Edition packaging, and included bonus discs, containing Star Trek related computer applications. These two-disc editions were packaged in steelbooks in soft-board slipcases.
In 2001, Paramount released Star Trek: The Motion Picture on DVD. For this release, the company decided to reappraise the film as a whole, introducing new CG special effects, and recutting the film to better reflect Robert Wise's original intentions. This "Director's Edition" was a two-disc release with extensive special features. (As a result, the theatrical cut of the film was not released on DVD until the Region 2 Original Motion Picture Collection.)
Following the enormous success of the Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Paramount re-released the other nine films in two-disc special editions with added features. Star Trek Nemesis was released with limited special features in 2003 before receiving the Special Edition treatment in 2005. The region 2 edition came all packaged in slip cases.
Star Trek was released simultaneously in vanilla (one-disk) and Special Edition (two-disk) formats in 2009; unusually, the Region 2 versions were released a day before the Region 1 versions were.
Also, starting in 2009, the first 10 movies were being re-released in "remastered" editions, digitally enhanced versions of the theatrical releases to meet High Definition standards. These 1-disc editions featured newly made "specials". They were released out of order, and it appears that unlike region 2, region 1 has not completed the entire run as individual releases.

Unlike the region 1 editions, the initial region 2 releases came in matching soft-board slip-cases from The Wrath of Khan onward. The Motion Picture was treated indiscriminately for both regions, with the exception of The Netherlands where the first release came within a dark-blue hardboard slip-case.
