Captain Picard must enlist the help of Captain James T. Kirk to help him save millions of people from the machinations of a madman.

Summary

From the back cover
The story begins with the launching of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B) and the mysterious disappearance of Captain James T. Kirk.
Then seventy-eight years later, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) receives a distress call from a remote scientific observatory. Picard learns that a newly developed super weapon has been stolen by a desperate scientist with an insane plot.
Facing the most difficult task of his career, Captain Picard must seek out the one person with the power to help him, a person long thought dead: Captain James T. Kirk. Together, the two captains will be tested as they've never been before. And both men will be forced to make the greatest sacrifices of their careers to save countless millions from a madman with a plan for mass destruction.

Background Information

  • The novelization Star Trek Generations was by J.M. Dillard. George Truett was credited with the abridging for the audio version.
  • The hardback edition has a "Behind-the-scenes" section, pp.241-280, written by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens.
  • The hardback edition was based on the original cut of the film, in which Kirk's death was fundamentally different. The alteration of the ending - after focus group screenings - came too late to be reflected in the novelization. The audio version - read by John de Lancie - was adapted from this edition, and so also contains the original ending. The subsequent paperback edition has a newly rewritten chapter that more accurately reflects that event of the film.
  • Although there's no mention of it in the movie, one moment in the novel while Kirk is standing on the bridge on Veridian III preparing to jump across, he has a moment and he thinks I wonder if Spock's still alive...
