For a general overview of Star Trek on iTunes, see iTunes Store.

Star Trek (iTunes) is a series of files available in Apple Computer's iTunes Store of the film Star Trek. It was released for purchase on November 17, 2009 in North America in both high definition and standard definition formats, and for rental on December 19, 2009.

Standard definition

The standard definition purchase of Star Trek costs US$14.99 and consists of two files. The first file is the film itself, in an iTunes-standard DRM-protected MPEG-4 file with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The file is 1.89 Gb in size, and the video has a resolution of 853 × 352, an aspect ratio of approximately 2.42:1, which exceeds the 480p EDTV format.

The second file is the "iTunes Extras" file, which is a subset of the special features available on the Special Edition DVD and Blu-ray versions of Star Trek. These extras are only playable on Windows or Macintosh-format computers with iTunes version 9.0 or later, or Apple TV version 3.0 or later. The file is 1.47 GB in size.

The features on the iTunes Extras include:

  • "A New Vision"
  • "The Score"
  • A chapter list for the film
  • International trailers from North America (English), Italy, Thailand, Hungary, Russia, France, Spain, and Germany
  • Links to related apps and the soundtrack on the iTunes Store, and the Paramount websites
  • A gallery of production art and movie poster concepts for the film

The total download of the standard definition purchase of Star Trek on iTunes is 3.36 Gb.

High definition

The high definition purchase includes all the features of the standard definition purchase, but includes a third file, which is a high-definition video of the film. Its cost is US$19.99.

The high-definition video file has a resolution of 1280 × 530, a 2.41:1 aspect ratio, equivalent to the 720p HDTV format, and also features Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Its size is 3.95 Gb, bringing the total download for the high definition purchase up to 7.31 Gb.

If the film is selected for syncing onto an iPod or iPhone, then only the standard definition video file is uploaded, as the HD version would far exceed the visual capabilities of either device.

Rental

This selection has been available on iTunes and Apple TV for rental in North America since December 19, 2009. The rental includes only either the standard or high definition video file (depending on which one is purchased), and does not include the iTunes Extras features. The file will automatically delete 24 hours after first being viewed.
