Star Trek: The Animated Series is a standalone Blu-ray set released in November 2016. The series was first released in September 2016 as part of the Star Trek 50th Anniversary TV and Movie Collection.

While the episodes have been remastered in 1080p high-definition, the bonus material was transferred from the 2006 DVD release in standard definition.

Background information[]

  • This was not the first HD release of any Animated Series episode: "More Tribbles, More Troubles" appeared as a bonus feature on the TOS Season 2 Blu-ray, although the series had been remastered in high-definition for the DVD release.
  • The possibility of the series' release in Blu-ray format was first mentioned by Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray producer Robert Meyer Burnett in an interview with TrekCore.com on 16 January 2013. Burnett later clarified that this was just a "wish list" of projects he'd like to see, but not something that was actually being developed at the time. [1]
  • The first official confirmation of the release was published on 18 March 2016. [2]
