Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Left Hand of Destiny is a two-part novel series, written by J.G. Hertzler and Jeffrey Lang. It is part of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine relaunch, although it takes place before the events of the Avatar novels, just after "What You Leave Behind".
- The novels were part of Pocket Books' tenth anniversary DS9 celebration.
- The Left Hand of Destiny came about when editor Marco Palmieri decided to create a Klingon story featuring Martok in the vein of King Arthur. Palmieri commented: "I wanted to do a different kind of Klingon story, one with a strong mythic quality like the legends of King Arthur. When Martok became chancellor of the Empire on DS9, that's how I kept seeing him, and I started drawing Arthurian connections to various characters and elements around him. DS9 had already given us the Klingon's Excalibur in "The Sword of Kahless". Worf was Lancelot, but without the betrayal. Alexander was Percival. Ezri was the Lady of the Lake. The clone of Kahless was Merlin. It all seemed to fit perfectly together. We still needed analogs for Morgan and Mordred, but that required only a little imagination. I knew that J. G. had done some writing, so I approached him with my ideas for an Arthurian Klingon epic focused on Martok, and he responded very enthusiastically. Ultimately, we decided that Martok's arc should take him from being a reluctant leader who was forced into office to a man who finally understood who he was enough to willingly take the mantle of leadership.
