A solar flare is an explosion in a sun's atmosphere. By the 24th century, solar flares could be triggered using particle beams and EM pulses.

During a battle in the Klingon civil war, Kurn destroyed two pursuing Birds-of-Prey by triggering a solar flare. (TNG: "Redemption, Part II")
