Sol was a yellow dwarf star. It was the primary for the Sol planetary system. The Sol system was located in Sector 001 (or Sol sector), which was a region of space in the Alpha Quadrant. The location of Sol in the Milky Way Galaxy was depicted on a Federation star chart in 2293. Sol was located near Tau Ceti, Alpha Centauri, and Sirius. (TOS: "The Cage", Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, ENT: "Two Days and Two Nights") The location of Sol was also seen in a viewscreen chart displayed by the USS Enterprise-D library computer. (TNG: "The Naked Now", "The Last Outpost", "Datalore", "Conspiracy")

History

The Human scientist Galileo Galilei was found guilty by an inquisition because of his teachings that Earth orbited the sun. (DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets")

In February of 2152, Captain Jonathan Archer pointed Sol out to Keyla in the Risan night sky. (ENT: "Two Days and Two Nights")

In April of 2153 as the Enterprise NX-01 was returning home due to the Xindi attack on Earth, Ensign Travis Mayweather notified Captain Jonathan Archer that Sol could be seen on the ship's viewscreen. (ENT: "The Expanse")

During the mid-23rd century on at least two accounts, the crew of the USS Enterprise used Sol to assist in a method of time travel known as the slingshot effect after they had been sent to the past. (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday", "Assignment: Earth")

In 2254, Sol was seen on a map depicting the inner Sol system. This map was scanned by the Talosians. (TOS: "The Cage")

Three years later, Sol was seen on a chart depicting the Sol system. This map was scanned by Nomad. (TOS: "The Changeling")

In the year 2286, the crew of "HMS Bounty" used the "slingshot effect" to travel to the year 1986, and once again in that year to return to 2286. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

Background information

The viewscreen graphic on the bridge of the USS Enterprise from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, was taken from page T0:02:07:02 of the Star Fleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph. Many of the names for astronomical bodies were unique to this book.

Star Chart

This chart naming stars within 20 light years of Sol was drawn by Rick Sternbach for the Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology in the late 1970s. Found on page 77, this chart showed Earth commercial and exploration routes after the use of warp drive began.

"The Explored Galaxy"

"The Explored Galaxy" was a map of charted space in the Alpha Quadrant. Sol was located between the Tholian Assembly and Romulus. Both locations were identified in DS9: "The Search, Part II", "Call to Arms" as being located in this quadrant. The chart, first seen chronologically in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game", and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".
