A sledgehammer was a tool that had a large, flat head attached to a handle. Unlike a smaller hammer, a sledgehammer generally required two hands to use.

In 2267, Captain James T Kirk said that he would "like to get [his] hands on the guy with the sledgehammer," referring to a headache he was suffering after a fight with Thelev. (TOS: "Journey to Babel")

In 2268, Leonard McCoy described reconnecting Spock's brain to his body as "trying to thread a needle with a sledgehammer." (TOS: "Spock's Brain")
