Sirius (also Alpha Canis Majoris or the "Dog Star") was a star system consisting of binary companion stars, Sirius A and Sirius B, located about 8.6 light years from Sol.

Sirius is most notable for the fact that, after the last Kzin War, in the mid-to-late 21st century, the Treaty of Sirius was signed in this system, ending the series of wars between Earth and the Kzin government. (TAS: "The Slaver Weapon")

The Sirius Cybernetics Corporation originated in this system. (TNG: "The Schizoid Man"; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine set decorations)

In 2364, Sirius was noted on a large star chart at Starfleet Headquarters. Also, on several other occasions that year, viewscreen readouts aboard the USS Enterprise-D showed the location of the A and B Sirius stars, in the form of charts from the Enterprise library computer. (TNG: "The Naked Now", "The Last Outpost", "Conspiracy")

  • Sirius A (primary)
  • Sirius B (secondary)
    • Sirius I
    • Sirius II
    • Sirius III
    • Sirius IV
    • Sirius V
    • Sirius VI
    • Sirius VII
    • Sirius VIII
    • Sirius IX

Background

The Enterprise computer's star chart was a drawing by Rick Sternbach that had originally been published, years earlier, on page 77 of the reference titled Spaceflight Chronology. This chart showed Earth commercial and exploration routes in the 2050s and 2060s, but no text attesting to this fact was included in the portion used onscreen, just the labeled names of the stars. The Starfleet HQ chart was the image behind the chair in the room where Dexter Remmick was killed in "Conspiracy".

Sirius is a real system in the Canis Major constellation. Modern scientists have determined Sirius's components are spectral classes A1V and dA2.

Apocrypha

The Sirius group was mentioned in Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek pitch in one of the suggested storylines. In the storyline "Kentucky, Kentucky," the Sirius group was home to an Earth colony for fifty years. This colony was attacked by viking-like savages and reduced to a "frontier" log-fort life. They were regrouped and led by Captain Robert April when the SS Yorktown visited the colony.
