"Geordi said you always wanted to be a pilot. Said you were a bit of a speed demon."
– William T. Riker, 2401 ("The Next Generation")

Lieutenant Junior Grade Sidney La Forge was a 25th century Human Starfleet officer, who served as the helmsman on the USS Enterprise-G under the command of Captain Seven of Nine.

Early life[]

Sidney La Forge was born in the late 24th century to Geordi La Forge. Sidney and Alandra followed in their father's footsteps and joined Starfleet.

Sometime during her youth, Sidney met Jean-Luc Picard and William T. Riker. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

As a child, Sidney would often crash speeders so that she and her father could repair them together. (PIC: "The Bounty")

Starfleet career[]

During her time at Starfleet Academy, La Forge earned the nickname "Crash La Forge" due to her crashing a shuttle twice. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

After graduating from the Academy, La Forge was given the rank of ensign and assigned to the USS Titan-A as its helmsman under the command of Captain Liam Shaw. When Admiral Picard and Captain Riker board the Titan-A, La Forge could not contain her enthusiasm at meeting Picard again. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

According to the crew roster posted by Bill Krause, La Forge is assigned to alpha shift. [1]

Following Commander Seven of Nine's orders, La Forge helmed the Titan to the Ryton system to allow Picard and Riker to reach Doctor Beverly Crusher's call for help and eventually, rescue the three of them and Jack Crusher from the SS Eleos. (PIC: "Disengage")

Unfortunately, as the Titan continuously failed to run from Vadic and the Shrike, La Forge eventually lost control over the ship and the Titan eventually plunged into the gravity well. (PIC: "Seventeen Seconds")

La Forge's skills as a helm were put to the test when the crew carried out the plan orchestrated by Picard, Riker, Beverly and Jack to use the waves emitted by the nebula to free themselves. Riker turned the conn over to Picard who guided La Forge to bring them about in an effort to position them for the wave. While Seven and Shaw worked to expose the nacelles, a Changeling impersonated La Forge, stating that she was sent down to help. Seven put her phaser to 'La Forge's' head, and said that she told Riker not to send anyone. When 'La Forge’ referred to Seven as "Commander Hansen", it proved to be her undoing and Seven fired.

At the same time, the real La Forge was at the helm working with thrusters. As she had no contact sensors, Picard had Jack call out contacts while he ordered her on the thrusters. The gravity well detonated and Picard ordered La Forge to gun the engines and stay with the wave. With the momentum from the wave, Riker ordered a tractor beam and had La Forge hurl an asteroid at the Shrike rendering it disabled. Afterwards, thousands of jellyfish-like lifeforms surrounded the Titan and Riker ordered La Forge to take them home. (PIC: "No Win Scenario")

Later, in sickbay, Beverly and Dr. Ohk conducted the autopsy on the dead Changeling, still in the image of Ensign La Forge. When Beverly asked the real La Forge to confirm for the record that the corpse is indeed not her, her response was to turn and vomit onto the deck, which Beverly took as a "yes." As LaForge looked on, Beverly reviewed the facts: On death, most Changelings returned to their liquid form, but this one remained in its most recent replicated form. She sliced into the skin, which to her surprise began to bleed. The Changeling body had no DNA whatsoever, and yet projected a blood-like plasma, which meant it could fool the traditional blood screening. La Forge wondered what that could mean. (PIC: "Imposters")

Following a meeting in the observation lounge with information from Ro Laren, Worf and Raffi, the Titan headed to Daystrom Station to learn what the Changelings had stolen. After Riker, Worf and Raffi beamed down, La Forge identified two Echelon-class ships ahead, which had traceable payloads; if they hit the Titan with their weapons, they could track the ship as they fled. "Spoken like a true La Forge," Picard commended her as they made their run. La Forge warned that short of being invisible, they wouldn't be able to come back until the other ships were unable to track them. Picard had La Forge set a course for Athan Prime. (PIC: "The Bounty")

Jack, Sidney, Picard and Beverly hid in sickbay as Vadic forced the crew to listen to the screams of their comrades. Jack's eyes continue to glow red and was able to hear Sidney's thoughts. Jack emphasized that he himself was not a Changeling and became increasingly upset all while looking at Sidney. Jack believed he could retake the ship and Sidney backed him up saying that his abilities had saved her life. Horrified by T'Veen's execution, Sidney continued to try to access the security lockout but they would need an AI matrix capable of trillions of operations a second. Picard realized there was someone onboard the Titan who could. When Data finally gained all control over Lore, Sidney cleared Riker, who was aboard a shuttle with Worf, Raffi and Deanna Troi, to dock as they retook the Titan. (PIC: "Surrender")

Sidney La Forge, assimilated

Sidney La Forge assimilated

Frontier Day arrived and while Sidney and the crew traveled to Sector 001, the Borg Queen assimilated Jack, who had gone to find her via the voices in his head. Using Borg tech imbedded in Jack's DNA, the Queen used Jack as a transmitter which activated nanoprobes which caused all Starfleet officers under the age of 25 to be assimilated, including Sidney and Alandara. The rest of the Enterprise-D crew escape to a maintenance shuttle while the assimilated crew took command of the Titan. (PIC: "Võx")

The Borg-controlled fleet continued to blast away at Spacedock's shields as an assimilated Sidney detected unauthorized movement on Deck 5. Suddenly, the order was given: "Eliminate all unassimilated." Seven of Nine led a team while Raffi Musiker led another as they both exchange fire with the assimilated bridge crew. By linking their phasers to the transporter system. the unassimilated crew was able to transport the assimilated into the transporter room and retake the ship. As the Titan went on strafe runs to delay the fleet from destroying Spacedock and Earth itself, Sidney and Alandra, along with the Borg crew broke out of the transporter room and destroyed the cloaking device. As the assimilated crew reached the bridge, the Queen's cube was destroyed and the nanoprobes dissipated.

A year later, the Titan had been rechristened in honor of Picard and his crew: USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-G. Jack, assigned to the Enterprise, stepped onto the bridge and called for the helm to set a course for the M'Talas system, and for tactical to fire all weapons. As he sat himself in the captain's chair, Seven, now a captain, ordered him out and instructed Sidney, now promoted to lieutenant junior grade, to ignore everything Jack just said, to which Sidney replied that she usually did. Seven gave the order, and the new Enterprise went to warp for a shakedown cruise. (PIC: "The Last Generation")

Alternate timeline[]

In an anti-time future, Sidney was the child of Geordi La Forge and Dr. Leah Brahms. Her siblings were Alandra La Forge and Bret La Forge. Jean-Luc Picard inquired about Sidney and the child's siblings when he reunited with Geordi around 2395. (TNG: "All Good Things...")

Relationships[]

Geordi La Forge[]

Sidney's father was Geordi La Forge. Geordi also talked about Sidney to Captain William T. Riker and described her as a "speed demon" and also informed him of her shuttle crashes at Starfleet Academy. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

According to Sidney, La Forge taught her that there was no law of physics that could not be either weaponized or broken by another law of physics. (PIC: "Disengage")

One of the few things Sidney had in common with her father was that she too had a hard time making friends, but knew the value of the ones she did make. (PIC: "Seventeen Seconds")

In 2401, Sidney and her father were not on good terms with each other, to which Geordi admitted that Sidney inherited his stubbornness. Sidney believed that her decision to become a pilot rather than an engineer had led Geordi to reject her. Accusing Picard of putting Sidney in danger, Geordi refused his call for help. Later, Geordi informed Sidney that she was staying at the museum with him, while Picard would state for the record she was an unwilling participant in his action. Sidney protested, knowing it was not true, but Geordi told her that this was how it had to be. Sidney replied that knew what was at stake, having seen a corpse that looked just like her. When Geordi insisted it should be left to Starfleet, she reminded him that she was also a Starfleet officer who'd grown up listening to his adventures under Picard's command, how they'd always stood up for what was right. Sidney went on to say that Geordi's problems with her stem from her not being like Alandra, who became an engineer like him. Sidney was able to sway her father to their cause by reminding him that he was the one who taught her that one's crew was one's family. Geordi eventually gave in after she attempted to install a cloak with Jack. Ultimately, father and daughter reconciled while fixing Data, and Geordi admited he was proud of her for doing what his younger self would have. (PIC: "The Bounty")

When Deanna Troi examined the schematics to the Borg cube's beacon and found that it was at the heart of the cube, Geordi believed it impossible to reach, even for a pilot like his daughter, Sidney. (PIC: "The Last Generation")

Alandra La Forge[]

Sidney had a close relationship with her sister, Alandra. When Geordi and Alandra beamed aboard the Titan, the sisters greeted each other pleasantly and when Sidney called their father 'impossible', Alandra promised to do what she could to help She When their father was being difficult, Alandra apologized to Sidney. (PIC: "The Bounty")

Seven Of Nine[]

Sidney had an amiable friendship with Seven of Nine and respected her. Sidney visited Seven in her quarters after she was dismissed by Captain Shaw. Seven was touched by Sidney's words and advised her to go rest. Against, the Captain's orders, Sidney always referred to Seven as Commander Seven rather than Hansen, which ultimately proved useful as Seven was able to use it to snuff out the Changeling aboard the Titan and kill it, when it had taken Sidney's form. (PIC: "Seventeen Seconds", PIC: "No Win Scenario")

After the Borg Queen ws destroyed and the younger members of the Federation's crew were removed of their nanoprobes, Sidney realized she was pointing a phaser at Seven and began to apologize. As Sydney broke down crying, Seven hugged her and assured her that it was over. (PIC: "The Last Generation")

Jack Crusher[]

Jack noticed the curt greetings exchanged between Geordi and Sidney, having not been on good terms with their respective fathers, he noted that they both had something in common. Later on, he apologetically remarked on how he was partly responsible for the situation, and complimented on Sidney’s ability to fly them "rather wonderfully" out of the messes he'd made, earning a smile from her and agreeing to aid him in his minor larceny. Geordi aided them in installing the cloaking device, but not before demanding Jack stay away from his daughter. (PIC: "The Bounty")

When Sidney and Jack were alone in a turbolift, Jack fumblingly attempted to flirt about his "cracking nice suite," and asked if she would like to "hang out." With Jack's abilities to hear her thoughts, he was able to 'be more subtle' by touching her hand, which surprised SIdney.

They both displayed excellent teamwork together as they ran through corridors to carry a plan laid by Picard to trap Vadic and her crew. Jack smiled and admitted their plan worked but by trapping their pursuers, but Sidney noted that it unfortunately led themselves trapped as well. A Changeling lieutenant asked Jack how it would feel for Sidney to die for him.

When Lore put a forcefield between Jack and Sidney, they were forced to individually fight the Changelings. Jack shouted her name in horror and concern as Sidney was left at the mercy of the Changeling lieutenant, who slammed her into the force field and on the ground screaming. Using his abilities to read her mind, Jack guided her movements against the lieutenant, allowing her to avoid its attacks while inflicting her own. Finally, Data was able to take control, and brought down the field between Jack and Sidney. Sidney trembleed as she tried to figure out how she was able to hear Jack's voice in her head, and holds her phaser on him, not sure what to make of him. Jack held his hands up in surrender as he pleaded and tried to reassure her before running away from an approaching Vadic. (PIC: "Dominion")

As the Titan continued to fall under Vadic's mercy, Jack became increasingly upset as he vented at his parents all while looking at Sidney, and he continues hearing her thoughts. Sidney nodded continuously as Jack further explained about his abilities. Sidney backed him up as Beverly scanned for hallucinations, grateful that his abilities had saved her life as they both looked at each other reassuringly. (PIC: "Surrender")

Following Jack's assignment to the Enterprise, Seven told Sidney to ignore everything he said and she replied that she usually does, earning a smile in return from Jack before departing for a shakedown cruise. (PIC: "The Last Generation")

Jean-Luc Picard[]

Having met Jean-Luc Picard and William T. Riker in her youth, they shared a mutual fondness and respect for each other. Sidney could not contain her enthusiasm at meeting Picard again to which Picard and Riker fondly return. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

While flying blind, Picard directed Sidney on thrusters as Jack calls out contacts, displaying Picard's trust and coordination with Sidney's piloting skills as they eventually ride the wave out of the nebula. (PIC: "No Win Scenario")

Picard remarks to Sidney that she 'speaks like a true La Forge' when she identified the Echelon-class starships at Daystrom Station. He immediately denied Geordi's charges against him for putting Sidney in grave danger and defended her choice to join Starfleet. Sidney in return protested against Geordi's statement that she was an unwilling participant in Picard's actions that it is not true. When Picard and Geordi realized their children were responsible for stealing the cloaking device, Picard continued to plead with Geordi that the crew, especially Sidney, needs him and Geordi eventually gave in and helped. (PIC: "The Bounty")

While Vadic continued to torment the Titan's crew, Sidney continued to try to access the security lockout from sickbay and said that they would need an AI matrix capable of trillions of operations a second. Picard smiled at her suggestion which puzzled Sidney, as he realizes there was someone onboard the Titan who cold. (PIC: "Surrender")

Background information[]

Sidney La Forge was portrayed by Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut. According to Terry Matalas, Unlike her sister, Alandra La Forge, she didn’t want to build ships, she wanted to fly them. [2]

According to the Star Trek: Picard Logs, the Titan-A was launched in 2402 under the command of Captain Shaw. [3] However, according to Terry Matalas, this was an error and the vessel was in fact launched in 2401. [4] Therefore, La Forge must have been assigned to the Titan-A around that time or shortly after.
