Sha Ka Ree was a location in Vulcan mythology, analogous to the Human conception of Eden, the Klingon Qui'Tu, and the Romulan Vorta Vor, from which all of creation was said to have originated.

In 2287, the renegade Vulcan Sybok embarked on a quest to locate Sha Ka Ree, recruiting a large number of followers via telepathic manipulation. Using this technique to gain control of the USS Enterprise, Sybok informed Captain Kirk that he had located Sha Ka Ree beyond the Great Barrier at the center of the galaxy, via visions given to Sybok by God himself. Although Kirk initially thought Sybok to be mad, Sybok's visions were proven correct when, after successfully penetrating the Barrier, the Enterprise crew encountered a planet on the other side. Traveling to the surface in a shuttlecraft, Sybok, Kirk, Captain Spock and Doctor McCoy learned that the being which had given Sybok his visions was, in fact, a malevolent alien entity which had manipulated Sybok into providing the entity with a starship, with which it might escape its imprisonment on the planet. Although Sybok was killed by the entity, Kirk, Spock and McCoy were eventually able to escape, with the assistance of the crew of a Klingon Bird-of-Prey which had been shadowing the Enterprise. (Star Trek V: The Final Frontier)

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, the name Sha Ka Ree is an allusion to Sean Connery, who was originally planned to play Sybok. However, according to Garfield Reeves-Stevens on the Star Trek V DVD commentary, it is a play on "Shangri-La".
The script spells the name as "Sha Ka Ree", but the region 1 DVD captions spell it as "Shakari".
