Sergeant is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional infantry grade, sergeant is the highest enlisted rank in a fighting organization, above a corporal. In comparison to naval ranking systems, this rank is approximately equivalent to the naval chief petty officer grade.

On 20th century Earth, sergeants command squads, consisting of 8 to 12 troops.

This grade exists in some form in many rank arrangements.

Other non-canon sources suggest the Bajoran Militia and Klingon Defense Force have sergeants.

Some rank systems use different grades of sergeant, such as (to name a few) the more senior "first sergeant," "staff sergeant," "master sergeant," "gunnery sergeant," "technical sergeant," "sergeant major," and "sergeant of the army."
