Sergeant was a rank, the equivalent of which was used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional military or police grade, sergeant was the highest enlisted rank, or a series of the highest enlisted ranks, used in a service organization. Sergeants ranked below commissioned officers and above corporals. In comparison to naval ranking systems, this rank was approximately equivalent to the naval petty officer (second or third class).
In the traditional definition, lower grade sergeants commanded, or were responsible for, squads consisting of around a dozen troops. Some rank systems used different grades of sergeant, such as "first sergeant," "staff sergeant," "master sergeant," "gunnery sergeant," "technical sergeant," "sergeant major," and "sergeant of the army."
- A Klingon sergeant was ordered by Kruge to execute one of the Genesis Planet hostages
- A police sergeant was simulated in a holodeck rendition of Dixon Hill stories
- Security Sergeant Lipton was knocked unconscious by Gary Seven at McKinley Rocket Base
- N. Kemper was a MACO aergeant of 22nd century Earth
- In the mirror universe, Travis Mayweather was a MACO sergeant
- A staff sergeant of the US Air Force was accidentally beamed aboard the USS Enterprise during a time travel mission in 1969
- Lieutenant Tom Paris wore the insignia of a Union sergeant when rescuing Q and Captain Kathryn Janeway from the Continuum
