A secretary was a person whose job was to perform tasks associated with the running of an establishment. This allowed those engaged in the primary function of the office, such as a detective, to better perform their job. Such functions would include meeting and announcing visitors, taking messages, and answering a telephone.
A secretary is also the title given to certain mid- or high-level governmental officials.

The Ferengi used also the position of a secretary. In 2371 a secretary worked for Brunt's office in the Tower of Commerce on Ferenginar. (DS9: "Family Business")
