"Scraping" was a term used by Starfleet Academy pilots to refer to the act of using one's shields to graze the shields of another ship.

In 2377, while taking part in the Antarian Trans-stellar Rally, pilot Assan performed this maneuver against Lieutenants Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres, who were piloting the Delta Flyer. Later, while transiting through the wormhole known as "the Möbius Inversion," B'Elanna performed the same maneuver on both Assan's ship and Irina's, reversing deflector polarity and pushing both ships aside.
