The scouter gig is a small motorboat the was carried aboard Constitution-class Federation starships during the late-2260s. This craft is stowed aboard in case the starship ever needed to disembark crew to explore the surface of an oceanic terrain. (TAS: "The Ambergris Element")

Background

It is unclear how the scouter gig made it to the surface of Argo. The scouter gig is presumably one of many terrain-specialized pieces of equipment on Federation starships, such as the aquashuttle, or the Enterprise-E's Argo buggy.
