Schizophrenia is a serious mental condition. It is often incorrectly generalized as having "split personalities"; although one type of the ailment causes this, there are several different types, some causing, for example, a prolonged catatonic state. (TOS: "Dagger of the Mind")

By the 2020s, there were several effective treatments for schizophrenia that could cure the disease. People with schizophrenia were placed in the Sanctuary Districts and classed as "Dims". (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I")
