22nd Century Scanner

A scanner (or hand scanner) was the standard hand-held sensory device used by the Earth-Starfleet in the 22nd century.

Commonly used in away missions, it was a much simpler precursor to the tricorders of the 23rd century and 24th century. (Star Trek: Enterprise)

Capabilities

Scanner circuit

Internal circuitry of the top (viewer) portion

In the 31st century, Daniels was able to fashion a temporal communicator out of Archer's scanner, communicator, and a small copper wire. (ENT: "Shockwave, Part II")

Scanners are also equipped with a quantum dating capability, that gives an at-least general approximation of when something was created.

In 2152, Archer used several scanners to scan a device that was shown to be made in the future. Soval didn't believe him, thinking that they must have been malfunctioning. Admiral Forrest asked, "All of them?" (ENT: "The Expanse")

When scanning a building or area, scanners are able to show a generic floorplan of the area, including a bright red-point to recognize biosigns. (ENT: "Carpenter Street")

Scanning limit

Unfortunately, the scanners can't always separate Human (or even humanoid) biosigns from that of other species. In 2153, Phlox was forced to be the only one awake on the ship for several days - becoming paranoid, he began carrying a phase pistol and a scanner to scan the ship for Xindi-Insectoids he believed he saw. Because of the scanners low resolution, he mistook an approaching Porthos for a Xindi. (ENT: "Doctor's Orders")

T'Pols Vulcan scanner has a maximum scanning limit of 3 kilometers. So presumably, the Human scanners are slightly less efficient. (ENT: "Carpenter Street")

Interfacing

Scanner being used to scan a conduit (2151)

The scanners can access other computers, interfacing with them, and potentially override or alter their programming.

Captain Archer and T'Pol were once sent back to 2004 Earth, with just scanners and phase pistols. Archer was able to interface the scanner with several vehicles to override the automatic locking mechanisms as well as the key recognition, so he was able to start the car. He also used his scanner to hack into an ATM to withdraw currency to use in the 21st century. (ENT: "Carpenter Street")

They are also capable of interfacing with other computer, such as explosives. In 2154, Lieutenant Reed tried to deactivate a Vulcan explosive left in the United Earth Embassy after another explosion, but was unable to. (ENT: "The Forge")
