The Sargasso Sea was a region in the gyre in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. It was often portrayed in literature and the media as an area of mystery.
In 2269, when the USS Enterprise was caught in a space-time warp, Captain James T. Kirk likened a starship graveyard discovered within to "a vast Sargasso Sea". (TAS: "The Time Trap")
