Sandpainting was an art form where sand of different colors were used to create intricate patterns on a flat surface. This art form was practiced by Native Americans, Tibetan monks and Australian Aborigines.

When Chakotay and Kathryn Janeway were stranded on the so-called planet New Earth, Chakotay worked on a colorful sandpainting while the Captain was relaxing in a bathtub. (VOY: "Resolutions")
