Sand bats were animals indigenous to Manark IV that had the curious evolutionary property of appearing as inanimate rock crystals, until they attacked their prey. It is unknown whether tricorder readings could tell their true identity when in crystal form, or if it was purely visual. (TOS: "The Empath")
