Samuel T. Cogley (2267)

Samuel T. Cogley was a 23rd century civilian attorney-at-law who practiced on Starbase 11 in the 2260s. Cogley was strong-willed and old-fashioned, preferring paper books to computers.

In 2267, Cogley defended James T. Kirk in his court martial, at the recommendation of Areel Shaw, following the apparent murder of fellow Starfleet officer Lieutenant Commander Finney.

Upon taking the assignment, Cogley moved into Kirk's quarters on the Starbase, bringing his extensive collection of law books with him. His collection included a copy of the work of the Tribunal of Alpha III in its original language.

During the trial, Cogley convinced the court to reconvene on board the USS Enterprise, so that Kirk could face his accuser - the Enterprise computer. Cogley was able to prove Kirk's innocence by showing that the computer record had been altered to falsely implicate Kirk. Eventually, with the help of Dr. McCoy and the use of a white sound device, Cogley and Commander Spock were able to prove that Finney had faked his own death in order to frame Kirk, and was in fact alive and hiding on the Enterprise.

After Kirk was aquitted, Cogley planned to defend Finney against the charges related to his plot against Kirk. He was confident of an aquittal. (TOS: "Court Martial")

Cogley was played by actor Elisha Cook, Jr.. He was the protagonist of the Pocket Books novel The Case of the Colonist's Corpse.
