Rome was a city on Earth in the European nation-state of Italy. During ancient times, Rome served as the capital of the Roman Republic, and afterwards the Roman Empire. Rome was invaded by the Visigoths. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds")

According to myth, Rome was founded by two brothers named Romulus and Remus, who were raised by a she-wolf. Capitoline Wolf, a statue depicting the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, was seen in the time stream as Earth's timeline realigned itself after Jonathan Archer and the crew of Enterprise successfully thwarted a temporal incursion by the Na'kuhl. (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II")

Chariot races were often held in ancient Rome. Such an event was also seen in Earth's resetting time stream, as was a Roman carriage. (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II")

One of the landmarks located in Rome is Saint Peter's Square, where as of the mid-22nd century Christian Masses were held. (ENT: "Cold Front")

Rome was the subject of the book A History of Rome, written by Roman citizen Titus Livius. English Poet John Keats died in Rome, in 1821.

Cultural references Edit

The proverb, "When in Rome... do as the Romans do", often refers to the practice of following suit with what others are doing. (ENT: "Babel One"; TOS: "The Savage Curtain"; TNG: "Justice"; DS9: "Let He Who Is Without Sin...")

Henry Janeway compared his resistance to giving up his bookstore so the Millennium Gate could be built to Rome holding of the Barbarians. (VOY: "11:59")

Both Professor Richard Galen and Dr. Julian Bashir have drawn comparisons to the Federation and ancient Rome; Galen, framing Picard as a Roman centurion "maintaining a dull and bloated Empire", and Bashir, when he learned of the deceptive actions of Section 31 in the Dominion War. (TNG: "The Chase"; DS9: "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges")

BackgroundEdit

Rome is named after the legendary figure Romulus, who along with his brother Remus were nursed by a she-wolf as infants. According to Roman legends, Romulus and Remus went on to found the city of Rome. Romulus became the first king after killing his brother. These names were adopted by the screenwriters for the home planets of the Romulan Star Empire. Real-life history shows that Flint, while going by the identity of Leonardo da Vinci, lived in Rome for a while, though this was never confirmed in Star Trek.
