Rip Van Winkle was a character from Earth literature. He was known for having awakened after a long sleep to find that everything around him had changed.

In 3074, a backup version of The Doctor wondered if he was similar to Rip Van Winkle, as he had been reactivated by the Kyrian Quarren after seven hundred years of inactivity. (VOY: "Living Witness")
