A Federation star chart depicting the location of Remus

Template:Disambiguate "Shinzon and his followers will be met with all deliberate force and sent back to that black rock they came from."

- Praetor Hiren (Star Trek Nemesis)

Remus was the third of four planets in the Romulan system, home of the Remans and sister planet to Romulus. The location of Remus in the Milky Way Galaxy was depicted on a Federation star chart, in 2293. (Star Trek Nemesis; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

This chart was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were: TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game" and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".

Historical

RemusMine

The pit of a dilithium mine

After Romulus was settled by a group of Vulcan dissenters over a millennium ago, Remus was slowly colonized and soon the exploitation of its rich dilithium sources began. The Remans, either a native species of Remus or the descendants of Romulan settlers, or descendants of both, are since regarded as an undesired caste in Romulan society and were forced to labor in the planet's dilithium mines. Since the Reman dayside is far too hot to be colonized, the Remans' bodies are adapted to the harsh environmental conditions on the night side. Their appearance and senses are the result of adaptation to eternal Reman night.

Political

Remus and Romulus were the major worlds of the Romulan Star Empire, one of the powers in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. However, Remus and its inhabitants had been excluded from Romulan politics until 2379, when Shinzon, a Human clone imprisoned on Remus, became Praetor of the Romulan Star Empire by a coup d'état. However, his plans to annihilate Earth and to crush the Romulan government were thwarted by the Starfleet Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

According to the CD-ROM game Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, the "Remmens" are the inhabitants of Remus III and that rebellions in the 2260s were a major problem for the empire.

Geographical

Romulan system map

A map of the Romulan star system, featuring Romulus and Remus, not to scale

Remus was tidally locked, with one hemisphere always facing its primary star while the other always faces away from it.

The conditions on the night side were adequate for a colonization, whereas the day side of Remus was permanently exposed to the Romulan sun. Although both planets orbited their central star, Romulus and Remus were often referred to as twin planets.

Background information

In Roman mythology, Romulus and his brother Remus were known as the brothers who founded the city of Rome. Romulus became the first king after killing his brother. The relation between the planets of Romulus and Remus reflect this. See Romulus and Remus. This would indicate that Romulus and Remus, along with Romulan, Reman, were names drawn from Earth mythology, not their own terms, which makes sense because the Romulan/Reman languages are different. There is ample precedent, as many peoples on Earth call themselves by different names than those which others use for them.

The two Romulan drone-ships rising from what could have been intended to be Remus.

In "The Aenar", the two Romulan drone-ships are seen departing a planetary body without an atmosphere with Romulus being visible in the background. It remains unclear whether the scene is supposed to show Remus or merely another asteroid or moon.

In TOS: "Balance of Terror", a symbol for Romii on the star chart may refer to the planet Remus.

According to the Star Trek: Star Charts, on page 55, Remus was classified as a Q-class planet. The official name of the government on Remus was the Reman Colonies.

In some non-canon Star Trek novels, Romulus was called ch'Rihan and Remus was ch'Havran. The Romulans are the Rihannsu, and Remus was said to be the more temperate of the two planets.

In the real world, a planet has been discovered that rotates with one side permanently facing the sun, the same as the fictional planet Remus. [1]
Though it can be presumed that this world was destroyed at the same time as Romulus, there was no canonical evidence of this.
