Klingon Raptor class
Type: Scout
Decks: 4+
Crew: 12
Armament: Disruptors, photon torpedoes
Defenses: Deflector shields

The Raptor-class scout was a Klingon warship utilized by the Empire during the mid-22nd century.

History

A small scout craft, the ship was previously encountered by the Vulcans prior to the 2150s, and were easily identifiable using the Vulcan database.

The first Earth encounter with a Raptor came in 2151, when the Earth Starfleet ship Enterprise stumbled across the IKS Somraw disabled within the atmosphere of a class 9 gas giant.

The crew apparently incapacitated, an Enterprise landing party worked to restore the ship's propulsion and regain altitude. While eventually successful, the landing party became trapped on the ship, allowing them time to explore the interior of a Klingon vessel for the first time in Earth history. The outboard plan of the Raptor utilized the same basic avian design that would be long incorporated into a classic and noble warship lineage. Similar in design as the D5 class battle cruiser, the Raptor-class design would be revisited over two hundred years later with the emergence of the Vor'cha class cruiser.

The bridge module is separated from the main body by a thin neck that flares out into the up-swept wings, which contain the warp nacelles. The impulse engine is located, like most Klingon starship classes, at the extreme aft section of the main structure.

Background

Some on the production staff wanted the bridge of the Somraw and other Klingon ships to be in pristine condition as this had never been seen before. However, the cost would have been prohibitive to construct sets without the aid of reusable pieces from the earlier series.

The word "raptor" means "bird of prey", however, in "The Expanse", it is learned that the Klingons have a ship type referred to as the Bird-of-Prey -- a distinctly different vessel.

"Sleeping Dogs" would be the only time that this ship class would appear, though it would be seen in the title menu of the Star Trek: Enterprise Season Two DVD.
