In military and civilian service organizations of many intelligent cultures, rank (sometimes denoted by rank insignia on uniforms) is how the jobs of different personnel are organized in a hierarchy of authority.

Military ranks

In the history of several humanoid cultures, ranks have been used in both naval organizations and also for infantry and fighting forces. In the Starfleet of the Federation, its predecessor the Earth Starfleet, the Bajoran Militia and the Klingon Defense Force, the tendency towards using the ranks equivalent to the planet Earth's naval and ground forces exists. The United States armed forces, as well as the militaries of the United Kingdom and Germany, show a good degree of influence on this system. Many other intelligent cultures have a variety of different titles and ranks, based on different languages and social characteristics:

Standard naval ranks

Standard infantry ranks
