Iowa quarry

The quarry in Iowa.

A quarry was a man-made pit created during mining to extract rocks and minerals.

In the early 2240s of the alternate reality, a deep quarry was located near James T. Kirk's home in Iowa. A fence was erected around the quarry to keep people away.

After young James Kirk stole his stepfather's Corvette, he drove the antique car through the fence and into the quarry. Kirk jumped to safety before the car went over the edge, but the vehicle was demolished after hitting the bottom of the quarry. (Star Trek)
