Geordi is attacked by an alien-possessed Romulan

Quantum singularity lifeforms are an alien species that caused a rupture in time.

In 2369 these lifeforms damaged a Romulan warbird. The Enterprise-D responded to a distress call by the Romulans. When the Enterprise attempted an energy transfer to assist the Romulans, it caused a disruption, freezing both vessels in time. Captain Picard along with Deanna Troi, Data and LaForge, who were not on the ship during the disrution, were able to reverse the effects of the disruption, and restore the proper time. Male in Romulan form

One of these lifeforms assumed the form of a Romulan male. He would attack La Forge, almost killing him. The Alien would explain that a nest of their young had been mistakenly placed in the engine of the warbird, causing engine failure. The alien would then disappear.

Female in Romulan form

This was a member of the quantum singularity lifeforms who took the form of a Romulan female.
