Summary

From the book jacket: The puckish super-being called Q has bedeviled Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Starship Enterprise since their first encounter at Farpoint Station. But little was known of Q's enigmatic past or that of the transcendent plane where he sometimes dwells. Now Picard must discover Q's secrets for the sake of all that exists.

While the Enterprise struggles to survive an alien onslaught, Captain Picard has been kidnapped by Q and taken on an astounding journey back through time to that immeasurably distant moment when the Continuum faced its greatest threat. But far more is at stake than simply the mysteries of the past, for an ancient menace is stirring once again, endangering the future of the galaxy, and neither Q nor Starfleet may be able to stop it!

-* '''0''' was at one time the mentor of the Q that we have all seen. It began When Q disovered 0 buried in the ice of a desolate planet and helped him to recover, and in return 0 promised that he would mentor Q to find new uses for his power.  After 0 had rediscovered some of his confederates he went to the Tkon empire and tried it, he was defeated so in revenge he caused the sun at the heart of the empire to go nova and wiped out the whole of the empire. This brought the judgement of the Q continuum against him, so he fled dragging an increasingly reticent Q with him until they found a temporary refuge, but eventully that was found and 0 was forced to do battle with four representants of the continuum. The battle lasted for millenia until all but one of 0's assisstants were left, It reached a point where 0 could have killed one of the Q but this shocked our Q into action, he was able to arrest 0. The Q tried and sentanced him for conduct that was unbecoming to a highly advanced entity, the punishment was to be banished outside the galaxy without hope of pardon or parole. After the sentance was carried out the galactic barrier was errected to keep him out until other beings could stop him without help.
