Psi 2000 was an uninhabited planet. This ancient world disintegrated in 2266. Before the sun in this system darkened, this planet was remarkably similar to Earth. Science officer Spock of the USS Enterprise believed that what happened to Psi 2000 might happen to Earth in the distant future. (TOS: "The Naked Time") This planet was located in the Alpha Quadrant. Its location in the Milky Way Galaxy was depicted on a Federation star chart in 2293. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, production art)

Before the planet's end, a science team had been stationed there on behalf of the Federation. The gravitational shifts associated with the disintegration of the planet resulted in the creation of large strings of water molecules known as polywater which resulted in the Psi 2000 intoxication.

Shortly thereafter, a landing party from the USS Enterprise beamed down to the planet and discovered the science team dead. During their investigation, Lieutenant junior grade Joe Tormolen unwittingly contracted the Psi 2000 intoxication and brought it back aboard the starship.

Suffering from the effects of the Psi 2000 intoxication, Lieutenant Kevin Riley powered down the ship's warp engines, causing the ship to begin spiraling towards Psi 2000. Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott was able to push the ship out of harm's way by initiating a cold start of the engines. (TOS: "The Naked Time")

Scotty later recounted these events to USS Enterprise-D chief engineer Geordi La Forge in 2369. (TNG: "Relics")

Background

In the novelization appearing in Star Trek 1, the planet was named ULAPG42821DB, or La Pig, for short.

The 2006 remastered version of "The Naked Time" featured several updated shots of Psi 2000, most notably, a computer-generated view of the science station on the surface of the planet.

"The Explored Galaxy"

"The Explored Galaxy" was a map of charted space in the Alpha Quadrant. Psi 2000 was located between the Tholian Assembly and Romulus. Both locations were identified in DS9: "The Search, Part II", "Call to Arms" as being located in this quadrant. This chart was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game", and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".

Star Trek: Star Charts

Psi 2000 was classified as a C-class planet. (pg. 22)
