Protein beans were a type of food supplement available at remote Starfleet facilities.
In 2258 Montgomery Scott was angry at the fact that he had been stationed at the Delta Vega outpost for six months and was forced to eat protein beans. He told James Kirk and an alternate Spock that he wanted "real food" instead. (Star Trek)
