Polynesian referred to anything originating from the Polynesian Islands on Earth, including the Polynesian people. Elements of Polynesian culture included luaus and leis. The Māori culture, which also belonged to that group, were known for their tribal tattoo art.

Henry Starling kept a small statue of a woman dressed in a grass skirt, a staple of Polynesian culture, on his desk. (VOY: "Future's End")

In 2373, Neelix recreated a Polynesian-style luau program on the holodeck including Hawaiian shirts. (VOY: "Alter Ego")

In 2374 several crew members of the USS Sutherland performed at Jadzia Dax's bachelorette party while Lieutenant Manuele Atoa performed a traditional dance. (DS9: "You Are Cordially Invited")

The script describes Atoa as a "Samoan dancer" who is performing the Samoan Fire Knife dance. It also asks for Samoan music.

According to writer Ronald D. Moore in an interview on the DS9 Season 6 DVD, he had hoped to establish the USS Sutherland crew as maintaining a number of Hawaiian and Polynesian traditions.

According to StarTrek.com, the Humans seen traveling in a primitive ship in the Star Trek: Enterprise opening credits were ancient Polynesians, which the site notes were among the first to explore the open oceans in their outrigger canoes. [1](X)

According to its coordinates on an okudagram, the fictional Gravett Island would belong to French Polynesia.
