A photonic burst is an energy discharge which, although harmless to organic tissue, disrupts holographic activity.

In 2374, Seven of Nine modified a holographic hand grenade to emit a photonic burst in an attempt to deactivate a force of holographic Nazis which were surrounding her and a number of other crewmembers on the holodeck of the USS Voyager. As she was preparing to throw the grenade, however, she was shot, causing her to drop it. The photonic burst subsequently dematerialized the Voyager crew's own weapons and munitions.
