The Phoenix was a bird from Greek mythology that was known for being reborn as it arose from the flames of its predecessor.

After being stolen by Tau, Leonardo da Vinci commented to Kathryn Janeway that "I have even resurrected my Great Bird like the Phoenix of legend," referring to the fact that he had begun work on his glider anew. (VOY: "Concerning Flight")
