Perjury was the crime of deliberately giving false information when under oath to affirm a wholly truthful statement. This could occur in a document or in spoken testimony at a legal proceeding. The act is intended to subvert and undermine the authority of institutions charged with administering justice, eliciting a miscarriage of justice. A person who perjured was named as a perjurer.
Commodore Stone accused James T. Kirk of committing perjury in 2267 regarding a sworn deposition submitted to him, which contained Kirk's account of the events leading to the death of Benjamin Finney. That deposition conflicted with computer records of the incident, leading to Stone's accusation.
