A peninsula is a piece of land that is surrounded by water on three or more sides, it is not completely split-off from the mainland like an island.

When in orbit of Haven in 2364 the last few surviving Tarellians led by Wrenn asked for the permission to settle on the edge of some sea, some unpopulated island or a faraway peninsula on the planet. (TNG: "Haven")
