Baxley grew up in Los Angeles and was a quarterback and track star at Eagle Rock High. Following his service as a marine, scout, and sniper in the 4th division in World War II he was awarded with two purple hearts, a bronze star, and a letter of commendation from the president. Following the war he went back to college and also became a quarterback again.
