An acient Earth means of transportation, the Orient Express, a steam-propelled locomotive train, connected Paris to Istanbull in the late 19th century. In later centuries, it was still held to be a romantic and mysterious method of transportation as one never knows who one will meet on the Orien Express.

At it's peak, the Orient Express transported 10,000 persons a year.

Sigmund Freud met Gertrude Stein on the Orient Express, and had dinner with her every evening.

Doctor Beverly Crusher is particularly fond of this train, and has a holodeck recreation of it. This program merged with an active program occupied by lieutenant commander Data and captain Jean-Luc Picard, almost killing both, due to a malfunction in the holodeck database retrieval program.
